What is yoga? Yoga means union.
You ask, what’s that got to do with me? How do I do yoga?
Well, you’ve gotta master the senses.
You spend all your time on Twitter. You eat with your emotions. You only leave your house for work. You work a job that you don’t like. You talk yourself out of pursuing your goals and dreams. You avoid people. You don’t share your thoughts and feelings. You barely respond to texts and phone calls. You don’t like to look in the mirror. You don’t dress in a way that makes you feel happy and confident. You have so many gifts and talents that you don’t share. You don’t even make time for the things you love to do.
Why? These are are all distractions. Distractions from what?
From you. You’re afraid of yourself.
You’re afraid of…
Your vast ocean of your mind and emotions. Your beautiful hair, face, and body. Your open, loving heart. Your resiliency. Your creativity. Your capacity to lead. Your capacity to heal. Your ability to connect with and through others. Your voice. Your independence. Your power to make your life exactly as you wish it to be.
Why do you fear these wonderful things? Is it because they force you to see… you?
What would happen if you looked at yourself and fully loved and embraced all of who you are?
Take a minute of silence. Reflect. Who is that person? What is their life like? How do they feel?
That is you, my love. Yes, you. All of those distractions are only that. Distractions. But what you just saw? What you just felt? THAT is you. Don’t you want to connect with that person? Then stop clinging to all the things that allow you to abandon yourself. Get rid of those distractions. Come into yoga with your true self.
Again, you ask, what is yoga?
Union. Full, complete, and absolute union.
Meditate. Go within. Become one with your mind and heart.
Asana. Be present in your body. Move, nourish, and love your body.
Community. Participate in the world around you. Connect with family. Meet friends. Be intimate with your lover.
Do what you love. Create, write, draw, talk, teach, cook, bake, hike, dance, read, play with your pets.
Serve. Give a piece of yourself to society in the most selfless ways possible.
Love yourself. Wake up early. Go for that job you always wanted. Travel. Adorn yourself with beautiful clothes. Get out of your comfort zone. Make you your top priority.
Pray. Worship. Whether you believe in one god or many. Or you see yourself as one individual in an infinite universe. Have faith. Give thanks. Surrender. Devote yourself to divine love.
You see? Yoga is everything. It’s so much more than pretty pictures on Instagram. It’s life. It’s god. It’s the whole world. It’s you.
Again, I ask:
What would happen if you saw, loved, and embraced all of who you are?
Don’t know the answer yet? Don’t even know who you are? That’s okay. You’ll find your answer one day. Just promise yourself one thing. Say it out loud with me:
“From this day forward, I devote myself to creating the union between my mind, body, soul, and god. I shall become authentically me, and I shall maintain the wholeness of my being at all costs.”
This is yoga.
